Other Things I've been known to do: I maintain packages for Fedora. I've been known to dispense wisdom and drive-by counselling to friends and acquaintances. I probably need to keep a little healthier. I've an occasional tendency to wax philosphical but usually when relevant or at least useful, even if it's not always understood - or even fully appreciated - at first.

The occasionally insightful personal stuff

I do have some geek-ish pursuits (I'm an old Ultima fan and member of the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter, their online support and fan organization) but I try not to fit the stereotype if I can help it.

Having been a working musician (yes, there was a time it wasn't an oxymoron) I've a strong appreciation of the art.
I'm also trained in Music Education (A BA from Griffith University here in Brisbane) and have taught students general musicianship and practical brass (trumpets, horn, trombones, tubas/euphonium). I don't play professionally these days, mostly for pleasure.

As you will probably discover (particularly from my friends and journal pages) I have a fairly electic group of friends and aquaintances and try to support them directly (and otherwise as best) possible.

I could probably go through a few others - my brother and I went to school with the Corbys, The guys from Savage Garden used to work at the old record store (Woody's in Woodridge, Logan City, now long gone) where I used to buy my vinyl as a youngster, even pr0n "actress" "Little" Jody Moore via a lap-dancing associate of mine (and her description of the little blonde professional pole-smoker was not kind at all..)

The Professional Bit.

I worked for many years as a "Systems Engineer" (their wording, not mine, no flame-mail from real engineers please!) for a large Australian-based webhosting and domain registration company (Webcentral, now part of MelbourneIT), having worked up from second level support in the 6+ years at the company.
I now work at Sauce Software as their sysadmin and sometime developer.
My particular interests are networking / administration - I know firsthand that all software sucks - my primary focus used to be Windows servers - and all hardware sucks, especially generic whitebox machines and older cruft.
I have worked on the UNIX/Linux side of the fence and have recently gone back to it, root access monkey and all.
I've a reasonable grasp of then following arcana, in case you're interested:

Mail services, primarily Postfix, qmail and Sendmail with some Exim / MS SMTP experience.
DNS - BIND, Microsoft's DNS servers, djbdns, maradns, tinkering with PowerDNS.
SQL: MySQL, MS SQL Server (7 through 2005) and some PostgreSQL
Webservers: Apache and IIS, some experience with LightTPD and Hiawatha
General services: Active Directory, OpenLDAP, DHCP (ISC and MS DHCP), Jabber and SIP/VoIP kit, PXE/TFTP/BOOTP, SMB (Native Windows and Samba), Squid proxy servers
General networking principles, design and firewalling
Security: Host and network security (trained by AUSCERT), auditing, intrusion detection, forensic investigation.
Scripting in shell (any sh derivative, Windows batch) Perl, some Expect, some VB.
Coding: PHP, Perl, some ASP, a smattering of .NET and Cold Fusion, primarily out of necessity.
Hardware and software troubleshooting of all kinds.
Monitoring and performance - Nagios, MRTG and Munin primarily
